Up or Down
"This is our road to spiritual growth. We change everyday... This growth is not the
result of wishing but of action and prayer."
Basic Text, pp.35-36
Just for today: The only constant in my spiritual condition is change. I cannot rely on
yesterday's program. Today, I seek new spiritual growth through prayer and action.
The Dynamic Nature of Spiritual Growth
Embracing Change in Recovery
In the journey of recovery, spiritual growth is a dynamic and ongoing process. It’s essential to recognize that our spiritual condition is never static; it is either advancing or retreating. Understanding this can profoundly impact how we approach our recovery each day.
The Perils of Stagnation
If we allow our spiritual growth to stagnate, we risk slipping back into old patterns. When we cease to actively engage in our spiritual practices, our progress slows and eventually halts. This stagnation can lead to a decline in our tolerance, willingness to serve others, and openness to new ideas. Without continual growth, we may find ourselves falling into conflicts and feeling disconnected from both ourselves and others.
The Path to Continuous Growth
To ensure our spiritual development remains on an upward trajectory, we must actively participate in our recovery program. This involves more than merely wishing for change; it requires deliberate action and prayer. Here’s how we can foster ongoing spiritual growth:
- Engage in Prayer: Regular prayer connects us with a Higher Power and seeks guidance beyond our own understanding. It helps us stay grounded and centered, providing the clarity needed for spiritual growth.
- Remain Open-Minded: To grow spiritually, we must keep our minds open and be receptive to new ideas and perspectives. Being teachable allows us to learn from others and integrate valuable insights into our own lives.
- Embrace New Experiences: Trying new approaches and adopting fresh ways of thinking can rejuvenate our spiritual journey. Each new experience adds depth and richness to our recovery.
- Actively Participate: Recovery is fueled by action, not just contemplation. By actively engaging in our program and practicing the principles we learn, we maintain momentum and continue to grow.
The Reality of Change
In the realm of spiritual growth, the only constant is change. Our spiritual condition will evolve daily, reflecting the actions and choices we make. Relying on yesterday’s efforts will not sustain our progress; we must seek new spiritual growth each day through committed prayer and action.
Just for today: Embrace the fact that your spiritual condition is in a constant state of flux. Avoid complacency by seeking continuous growth through prayer and active participation in your recovery journey.
By acknowledging and embracing the necessity of ongoing spiritual development, we can avoid the pitfalls of stagnation and continue to move forward on our path to recovery.
