Real Values

A New Path to Wisdom and Loving Decisions

September 1st – Daily Meditations for Recovering Addicts

Addiction fundamentally alters our value system, often replacing principles of integrity with those of self-interest and denial. As we embark on the journey of recovery, the challenge lies in transforming these distorted values into ones that genuinely enrich our lives. Today’s reflection on “Real Values” from the Basic Text of our program offers profound insight into this transformative process.

From Rationalizations to Real Values

In the throes of addiction, our values were often distorted by our disease. We might have believed that "you pushed me, so I pushed back" was a valid principle, or that claiming something as "mine" was acceptable, even if it wasn't rightfully ours. These were not true values but rather rationalizations that fueled our destructive behaviors. They trapped us in a cycle of blame and entitlement, further entrenching us in our addiction's grip.

These skewed values led us to make decisions that dug us deeper into the grave of our addiction. Rather than guiding us toward a better life, they encouraged actions that perpetuated our suffering and isolation.

The Transformative Power of the Twelve Steps

The Twelve Steps offer a new framework of values, grounded in principles that foster wisdom and love. Central to this transformation is placing our faith in a Higher Power, rather than relying solely on our own judgment or external sources. This shift allows us to grow secure in ourselves, trust our communities, and develop healthier relationships.

Recovery teaches us to embrace honesty and take responsibility for our actions. The principle of selflessness gradually replaces the old, self-centered values. We learn to act with integrity, making decisions that reflect our commitment to being a responsible and productive member of society. These values don’t just prevent further harm—they actively restore us to a life of connection and purpose.

Embracing a New Way of Life

Today, take a moment to appreciate the values you’ve developed through your recovery journey. Reflect on how these values have empowered you to make wise and loving decisions, enhancing your role within your community. The transformation from a life governed by addiction-driven values to one guided by genuine principles is both profound and rewarding.

Just for Today

Let’s express gratitude for the values we've cultivated. Acknowledge how they enable you to contribute positively to your community and lead a fulfilling life. Embrace the principles of honesty, responsibility, and selflessness, and continue to apply them in your daily decisions. This gratitude not only reinforces your commitment to these values but also strengthens your recovery journey.

By embracing these real values, you are not only improving your own life but also positively impacting those around you. This new path, grounded in wisdom and love, marks a significant shift from the destructive patterns of the past to a future of meaningful, fulfilling connections.
